The Shrine of Our Lady of Snows , or simply Ermita de las Nieves , traces its origins to the fortress tower that rose during the conquest of the island in 1481 , under the command of Captain Alonso Fernandez de Lugo , appointed mayor of the same by Pedro de Vera .
Later, in 1532 , the Genoese merchant Anton Cherry and his wife , are committed to building a monastery and church , building only the latter .
The current building has undergone a series of renovations and expansions over time. In 1717 , the ruined chapel is rebuilt by order of Christopher del Castillo.
