The beautiful coastal village of Castro Urdiales is 65km 36km from Bilbao and Santander. It was founded by the Romans as Flavióbriga , although the first traces of a settlement in this area date from the Upper Paleolithic. Proof of this is the presence of rock paintings in the cave of Peña del Cuco .

The village , with its characteristic houses with wooden balconies , dates from the Middle Ages.
